Fans of long running TV sitcoms will know of the city of Seattle as the backdrop to the popular show 'Frasier', and it is a location which suited the show to a tee. This is a place to dine, and dine well, to take in some high culture, a smart city where innovation in arts, culture, media and business reap rewards. It is the home too, of the worlds most famous coffee house franchise and a strong café culture to go with it. This is all a far cry from its origins as a Pacific North West timber port, and while the port still dominates the industrial and leisure travel landscape it is the city itself which harbours the soul and spirit of Seattle.
There is certainly a well defined origin for spirit of entrepreneurship in Seattle, courtesy of the 19th century Gold Rush, and ever since, people have come to the city to create, innovate and educate. The colleges and high-tech industries help raise the bar for a youthful intellectual and cultured community and this finds a means of expression in the many music clubs, trendy galleries, and of course the coffee shops, where a latte can be enjoyed against the backdrop of live music, poetry, comedy or other impromptu cultural event. Starbucks is still here, as it has been since opening its first store in the 1970s, and it is joined by a succession of others, keen to reflect and celebrate the local culture.
While many will recognise the city for its starring TV roles, for others Seattle will always be synonymous with music, from Jimi Hendrix to the grunge phenomenon of the early 90s. The music scene remains a proving ground for many artists and a night out at a live music club is a regular part of the social fabric of the city. Like most cities, Seattle is comprised of distinct neighbourhoods each with their own cultural dimensions and just like there are nightlife hubs for pubs and clubs, there are downtown business districts, and places where the style and sophistication of high art, orchestral music, up-scale shopping and fine dining come together.
There are hotels found throughout but the Seattle boutique hotels offer something different. These are found throughout the city too and more than any other type of hotel they will reflect the culture and style of the locale. This is perhaps most evident in terms of architecture, a feature of the city for which it is rightly famous. The most famous landmark is the Space Needle and it sits on a hill overlooking the downtown area and some of the best buildings in the city. Not only do the hotels here share some of the great architectural appeal, both traditional and modern, but also place guests at the heart of the main shops, restaurants, and most popular sights and attractions.
Pioneer Square, adjacent to downtown, is the oldest part of the city, while Capitol Hill is where to find the Pike Pine nightlife area. A further neighbourhood of note in the northern party of the city is Fremont and Wallingford, the bohemian quarter, known for public arts displays and other means of expression. Here the boutique hotels carry a certain bohemian chic as befits the classification. So, Seattle certainly has the architectural credentials to fulfil a boutique hotel requirement and it has the strong cultural elements too. All that remains is the service and as a city which has been welcoming travellers since its inception, the service culture is well established and no better displayed than within the city's best boutique hotels.
